The Schantz Pipe Organ

When Saint Andrew’s was built in 1958, it was structurally and acoustically designed to support a pipe organ in the church gallery. As an upper story near the church’s entrance, the gallery is an ideal location, allowing for projection throughout the church and room for an electro-pneumatic console. The console is placed at an optimal distance from the pipes to enable clear sight lines for the organist or conductor, and clean, articulate pipe “speech” for sound clarity in Saint Andrew’s reverberant nave. Additionally, the gallery offers high visibility for beautifully constructed exposed pipe work.
For the 25th anniversary of the church, with these guiding principles in mind, a committee formed to oversee the instrument’s selection and installation. They chose the Schantz Organ Company of Oroville, Ohio to build it, in keeping with the overall design of the church. The goal was to pair a fine instrument with a fine building, where the instrument’s purpose needed to fulfill all the needs for church services, including congregational singing and choral accompaniment, while also being able to perform solo literature with recital quality. This organ has three manuals, with two under expression. Considered an elevating enhancement to worship, “raising its voice” in praise to God, the organ was inscribed on its façade with the Latin words, “Soli Deo Gloria” – Only to the Glory of God.
